ARTIST STATEMENT

Whether it be through my concrete/visual poetry work, or my constraint based poetics, I’m concerned with the ways in which the method in which a poem is written affects the poem itself. Seeking to explore truly how much the HOW and WHERE of a poem can do even more than the so-called WHAT of a poem. What message is built within a typeface, how does a constraint of letters/word length/phrase length inform itself, how do the tools we use convey themselves — and what can be done within them?

Kevin Stebner is an artist, poet and musician from Calgary. He produces visual art using old videogame gear, and produces music and soundtracking with his chiptune project GreyScreen, post-hardcore in his band Fulfilment. Stebner is the author of Game Genie Poems, a collection of lipogram poems written in a Nintendo Game Genie (Blasted Tree), and Inherent, a collection of 100 letraset concrete poems (Assembly Press), and is known for his typewriter art and concrete poetry. He is also the proprietor of Calgary’s best bookstore that’s in a shed, Shed Books.
